I am an artist and educator whose work explores fairy tales, the body, graphic and narrative medicine, as well as collective storytelling practices through mechanical books that combine animation and paper craft. My interests are in combining technology, traditional book arts, and sequential storytelling to create new forms of narrative for the 21st century.

CURRENT & RECENT PROJECTS

  • 2022: An ARTFul Interpretation of Orthopedics, a collaboration with the Department of Orthopedics & Spine Center,  sponsored by the Fine Art Program & Collection at Montefiore Medicine, highlighting and exploring the work of orthopedics, as told through the art of paper craft.
  • 2022: My Anatomical Journal, a six-spread pop-up book with an accompanying audio piece of first-person stories. Currently available for pre-sale: https://mariannerpetitbooks.bigcartel.com/product/my-anatomical-journal
  • 2020-2023: The Anatomical Paper Cuts and Cards Series. An ongoing series of small affordable paper cuts, pop-up cards, posters, and postcards. (Inspired by antique medical books including “Health Knowledge The Most Essential Thing In Life” and “Medicology or Home Encyclopedia of Health: A Family Guide”.)
  • 2022: Prince Lindworm An experimental book and live animation based on the Norwegian Fairy Tale. (Forthcoming. 2023)
  • 2022: Murder, Forgiveness, and Perpetual Sorrow. An illustrated collective hybrid book. It shares the stories of individuals who have had their lives disrupted by murder and is an exploration of the particular consequences that can surround violent loss. The illustrated book, which also contains audio and animation, follows the stories of 10-15 individuals and also includes my own story of survivorship. The storytellers are survivors, perpetrators, as well as professionals. (Forthcoming. 2023)
  • 2021: Mouth & Toes: The World of 19th Century Silhouette Artists with Disabilities”, a collaboration of Laurel Daen and Marianne R. Petit. The book tells the stories of the world of disabled and atypically figured artists working in the very popular and affordable alternative to portraiture, the silhouette. Artists include Martha Ann Honeywell, Sarah Rogers, and Saunders Nellis. The book additionally explores the role of the Peale Museum, the physiognotrace, and the work of Moses Williams, former slave of Charles Peale and master silhouette artist. Book formats include an interactive “crankie”/moving panorama, a printed scroll/accordion book, hand-held flip-books, and a forthcoming eBook. Completed through a Jay and Deborah Last Creative Artist Fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society
  • 2020: Epstein & Hassan: What You Can and Cannot Say During Interracial Sex.
    An illustrated book based on the long-running and groundbreaking comedy show of Epstein & Hassan. It was completed while sheltering-in-place Spring 2020 and will be released as an eBook in lieu of their cancelled comedy performances during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 2020: There’s No Place Like Home. An interactive online fable in collaboration with performance artist and educator Naimah Hassan. Funded through the Franklin Furnace’s SEQuential ART for KIDS program in the New York Public School, promoting equity in education. The project was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic as an alternative to theater education in the classroom.
  • 2020: The Person You (Don’t) Want To Be. An anti-personality book drawn from workplace encounters. The project contains two parts: an open edition personality swatch book with companion augmented reality (AR) app through which 21 short animations can be accessed.; and 2) a limited-edition hand-assembled waterfall card set.  The project debuted March 2020 at Art on Paper in New York.
  • 2020-2021: 21st Century Nursery Rhymes. A collection of childhood nursery rhymes adapted for our times. The stories are contained in a single volume limited edition accordion pop-up book, with a companion LCD book featuring an animated version of each story. The project debuted March 2020 at Art on Paper in New York.
  • 2019: Portable Reusable Inflatable Paper Votive Kit for Meditation on the Seven Virtues. A paper kit for contemplation. The kit represents appreciation for the historical representation of the cardinal and theological virtues, continued love of votives, and appreciation of a beloved / simple origami form. It is an open-edition affordable work.
  • 2018: Our Hysterectomies. A print and eBook containing the illustrated first-person accounts of sixteen women who have had hysterectomies, oophorectomies, myomectomies and more. The book contains animation, as well as printable DIY paper craft including reproductive system coloring book pages, pop-ups, and paper cuts. The eBook was originally made available for download through a Crowdrise campaign with all donations going directly to Planned Parenthood. Contributors received a copy of the eBook from me, regardless of the donation amount. As of September 2019 the eBook has been made freely available online to all.
  • 2018: The Struwwelpeter More Morbid Pop-Up Tales. A single-volume pop-up book based on the Struwwelpeter by Heinrich Hoffman. The book contains a scroll, as well as printable paper craft activities. It also includes an animated version of each story accessible through the book via a companion AR (Augmented Reality) app. The book was created as an affordable alternative to my limited edition handmade books found in numerous museum and library collections. The book was funded through a 30-day Kickstarter campaign that reached 116% of its goal, raising $46,527.
  • 2016: Breath. A three-part investigation of the respiratory system. The series includes an anatomical flap book, anatomical cross-section paper cuts, and an animated (projected) book.

Exhibitions included interactive audio and light sculpture, immersive environments, and alternative energy powered art.
