Reflections on Joy. I decided to begin 2018 with archiving incomplete, never-to-be-finished, or disassembled-and-never-to-be-reassembled artwork into LCD video cards. This was a piece entitled “Commencement of Joy” (2004) that was an animated diorama contained in a birdcage. I got the idea for the animation from a small weird little clay figure I had sculpted while listening to the “Chominciamento di gioia: Virtuoso dance-music from the time of Boccacio’s Decamerone” by the Ensemble Unicorn. The video is in three parts and is based on three poems: “Ashes of Life” by Edna St. Vincent Millay, “The Pleasures of Merely Circulating” by Wallace Stevens, “If the Lovestar Grows Most Big” by E. E. Cummings. In about 2008 I re-used the cage and the technology never particularly worked again. So now in 2018 it is a “Reflection on Joy.”
