The Hatfield’s Everything Must Go. An exploration of art and commerce through gift and barter economies. Produced by Greylock Arts.
As part of DownStreet Art, Ephraim & Sadie Hatfield created Everything Must Go! a site-specific work through which they manufactured large quantities of small electronic art works that they gave away free of charge through their pop-up “store” at 24 Eagle Street in North Adams, MA. Each work of art featured an object that had been gifted by the public to the Hatfields.
Give One, Get One Free:
The Hatfields sought interesting items, curiosities, toys, trinkets, memorabilia, and other objects that could serve as a focal point for these works.
Before the opening and throughout the exhibit’s run, people were encouraged to bring in their small objects so that they could be incorporated into a future work of art. Gifted objects were no more than a few inches in size, and light-weight items were preferred.
Prior to the opening, objects could be delivered to MCLA Gallery 51 at 51 Main Street in North Adams daily from 10 am – 6 pm. Those who donated objects before the exhibit’s opening on Thursday June 23rd received a coupon which guaranteed the holder a work of art at some point during the exhibit’s run.
